I am a Mother of two little girls, and I have a Mother who has had an intensely traumatic childhood – way worse than the trauma I have experienced at the hands of my Mother and others. She worked out her trauma on me, and she still does. I bore her emotional abuse and often thought something was innately wrong with me because I would make her so angry or not say or do the right things to please her. I since have discovered I remind her of people in her past that have caused her pain and trauma. I also am a people pleaser and deeply empathetic to those struggling around me. These, among other reasons, caused me to question my own reality and wonder if I were even a decent person. Reading your blog post and instagram reels have hit home with me in such a profound way. Your honesty, tips, humor and resources provided have been incredibly insightful and beneficial. I am so glad my sister-in-law sent me a reel of yours one day and I so happened to have the time to “creep” on your content. I try to do so daily now. I have also purchased your Honest Mom Journal. Only 3 pages in so far, but I am already hooked and so impressed with the content you have unpacked for so many of us. Thank you for being you and putting yourself out there.

Thank you. You speak about me. I had a traumatic childhood, and I carried the burden of pleasing and fixing my mother for almost 30 years of my life. Now I am a mom of two, and I set boundary with my parents who were, and still, emotionally abusive. But now I can occasionally talk to them over skype, and gradually letting go of my trauma, and knowing that their problems are not mine, I am not responsible for that, and I am worthy regardless what cruel words they said to me.

You are so welcome. I myself have taken many years, lots of therapy and a degree in sociology to full get to the point of empathy and boundaries together. It’s hard to dissect it all but worth the hard work <3

I’m in my master’s program for Psychology, and I currently work as a Clinical Assistant/Registered Behavior Technician. Through my education, getting older, and becoming a mom of 2 myself, I have often thought deeply about what my own mom experienced and how her parenting has affected my own. I know what my weaknesses are and what I don’t like that I do as a mother. But I’m also able to recognize my strengths, some of those strengths I certainly received from my own mom, and some of those negative behaviors I also received from her. But, I’ve learned to let go of the resentment and hurt, and to appreciate the good things she DID give me and did FOR me!! I’ve been able to understand the ‘why’, which has lead to increased empathy towards her. It has also helped me appreciate my own growth as a parent, because I recognize that I’ve broken parts of the cycle by refusing to engage in some of the forms of punishment I experienced growing up. I’ve actually had discussions with coworkers, and even my nieces about realizing that our parents had to parent us using the tools they were given by their own parents. Thankfully, with the advances in Psychology and mental health, as a society we have been able to learn and evolve from parenting behaviors that have adverse effects on child/adolescent development.
Thank you for creating this safe space that allows us to continue the dialog on such a pertinent and important subject!
