Yes – we can’t keep pouring from an empty cup! You’re also right in that shifting our expectations of ourselves based on our circumstances can really help our mental health. It’s a balance of both.

Wholeheartedly agree with this article. I literally said to my partner the other day that I look after everyone else and then I am supposed to self care so that I can continue looking after everyone else, but where is the person caring for me – I told him that I mother our child but he should ideally be doing more to care for me since all my energy is going elsewhere. I also dislike feeling blamed for my “mental health issues” when in reality I was my best self just before I became a parent, I have just completely suffocated in here. I’m tired of being tired and angry. My best option now is to let go, do less where I can.

I have seen this with my friends too, sadly. You’re right – partnered women everywhere deserve better. Studies have proven that.

The time that would otherwise be channelled into looking after a partner can be redirected to looking after HERSELF.

Partnered women SHOULD have someone to care for them, but the distinction between single women and partnered women highlights that for partnered women (and especially partnered mothers), there is not enough time to look after herself after she’s looked after everyone else.

Sadly divorce (with 50/50 custody) was the best thing for my health and I got back so much time to care for me and ease my burdens.
